    Constructed as a PBM-5.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Navy with BuNo 84722.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Coast Guard with s/n 4722.

    Markings Applied: R-22

    December 1952

    Ferry flight.
    Flown from Seattleand to the Coast Guard Air Detachment in Sangley Pt. P.I.

    Was used extensively for servicing Loran stations in the Philippines and SAR missions including aiding the rescue of some survivors of the crash of CG PBM 4738 (Big John Vukic) by dropping flares over the crash site, just off the coast of Swatow, Chinafor the USS Halsey Powell.

    2 February 1954

    Ferry flight.
    Returned to San Diego and was replaced in the Phillilpines by a Grumman UF-1G Albatross.

    T J Murphy comments (3 July 2021): The photo included here was shot just outside Salem Harbor where the Coast Guard maintained a base on Winter Island from 1935 through 1970. That is Hospital Point Lighthouse just below the starboard wingtip.
