    Constructed as a Nimrod MR.2 by Hawker Siddeley.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the Royal Air Force with s/n XV257.

    Notes: The Nimrods are mostly gone now, but they started off in this smart colour scheme before they were painted in Hemp. XV257, an MR.1, is seen at Kinloss in 1981. This one scrapped at Woodford in 1992.

    3 June 1984

    Crashed.
    Summary: The airframe was written off. It was a local military flight from Newquay-St Mawgan RAF Station (NQY/EGDG), United Kingdom. The accident occurred at near Lands End (United Kingdom) while en route. Narrative: The Nimrod aircraft took off on an exercise Search and Rescue (SAR) sortie from its base at RAF St Mawgan. It was carrying in the bomb bay, as part of the SAR equipment, a normal load of 5 inch reconnaissance flares. In accordance with normal practice, the first navigator switched the flares release units to live shortly after takeoff...
